Mountain system in south-central Europe extending from south France through Switzerland, Italy, southwest Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina into Yugoslavia. Its highest peak is Mont Blanc, in eastern France on the Italian border, at 4,810 meters.
