A perspective on the
ubiquitious computing
ideas (originally of
Xerox PARC) expounded by
Sun Microsystems's
Glenn Scott.
The ideas revolve around making networking and file storage
public utilities where you can just plug equipment into
a network socket like you plug electrical equipment into an
electrical socket.
The aim is to create dynamic virtual networks
or supernets. with "no distinguishable difference
between being in HP's conference room or in my office, or
at home, or at the beach, or in New York,"
(MIT Techreview)
The big push behind this idea is to remove the necessity
of building corporate and individual networks. Instead
you dynamically allocate the packet transmission and file storage (disks) as you need them.
