Super Bowl X|Super Bowl XII
January 9, 1977
Oakland won their first championship crown with an amazing offensive game, roundly beating Minnesota, who went home winless in their fourth (and to-date, last) Super Bowl appearance.
The Raiders offense, guided by quarterback Ken Stabler, gained a Super Bowl record of 429 yards on the offense. MVP wide receiver Fred Biletnikoff made 4 receptions for a total of 79 yards, while running back Clarence Davis gained 137 yards rushing.
The Vikings were scoreless in the first half, allowing Oakland to score nineteen unanswered points. Several comeback attempts were stalled in the second half as Minnesota QB Fran Tarkenton had two key passes picked off by the Raiders defense.
Bud Grant was the head coach for Minnesota, and John Madden (the man, the myth, the beer drinker) led the Raiders. Attendance broke a record, and the 100K mark, at 103,438. An additional 81 million people watched the game on television, at that time the largest audience to ever watch a single sporting event.
