n. (also called
shore fly) - Any of the Ditperan flies of the family Ephydridae that
inhabit the
shorelines of highly
saline bodies of
water, specifically
brine lakes, to feed upon the
algae that grow along the
shore.
Most brine flies have a
lifespan of 3 to 4
days. They are an abundant food source for
flamingos and other
wildlife around brine lakes.
Native American tribes used to
gather both the
adult flies and the fly
pupae as
food.
