The theory of
technological singularity was actually proposed by
Vernor Vinge in an essay available on the
Internet, and used in his books
The Peace War. It proposes that, at some point in the future, technology will reach a point where it advances not simply from month to month, but from
minute to minute--and literally, if you blink, you miss the end of the world.
Of course, whether or not this will actually happen is anybody's guess.
